China's New Leadership; The Art of Literary Translations

On this week's show, leading China expert Joseph Fewsmith spoke on "Political Succession in China: Does It Matter?" Fewsmith is Professor of International Relations and Political Science as well as director of the East Asia Interdisciplinary Studies Program at Boston University. His most recent book is "China after Tiananmen: The Politics of Transition.

In the second part of the program, poet and translator Michael Hofmann talked about the varying translations of Wolfgang Koeppen's German masterpiece "Death in Rome." Hofmann is an author in his own right, having won several major prizes for his poetry as well as honors for his translations.
